NORTH SOUND, VIRGIN GORDA

It All Began With
A Family & Their Boat

When the Hokins set sail for Bitter End on their vintage ketch Alianora in the 1960s, they had no idea that what awaited them ashore would become their family’s passion for generations.

About
Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is Bitter End’s island home — a place where untamed beauty and seafaring spirit meet in equal measure. Named by Christopher Columbus for its resemblance to a reclining woman, this 8.5-square-mile gem is the third-largest island in the British Virgin Islands, yet it feels worlds away. Along its shores, the protected waters of North Sound wash gently onto Bitter End’s mile of waterfront, creating one of the Caribbean’s most storied and spectacular settings.

About
Virgin Gorda

Natural beauty defines both Virgin Gorda and North Sound. Indigenous plant-lined trails wind through nature sanctuaries and national parks, leading to awe-inspiring vistas and hidden coves. No visit is complete without exploring the world-famous Baths, where giant granite boulders form grottoes and tidal pools at the water’s edge. Savannah Bay’s sweeping white sands regularly rank among the Caribbean’s best, while a hike to Gorda Peak reveals panoramic views across the surrounding islands.

Off Virgin Gorda’s northeastern arm, North Sound forms one of the finest deepwater anchorages in the Caribbean and is home to the Bitter End Yacht Club. Protected by a necklace of islets and reefs, it has long been favored by mariners—from Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins to today’s global yachting community. Beneath its calm, clear waters lie a vibrant underwater world of coral reefs, sea sponges, and brilliantly colored fish, creating a vivid microcosm of the BVI’s legendary sailing and snorkeling grounds.

Bitter End Foundation

Established in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, the Bitter End Foundation is our enduring commitment to seaside communities and the waters that sustain them. As the nonprofit arm of Bitter End Yacht Club and Bitter End Provisions, the Foundation supports marine conservation, coastal resilience, and community well-being through direct aid, education, and environmental stewardship.

Every purchase from Bitter End Provisions helps fund this mission. What began as a relief effort is now a global initiative rooted in the belief that those who love the sea must also protect it.
